ARGENTINA: Ready to take first step in electoral dance

Nine different presidential pre-candidates have registered to take part in Argentina’s open, simultaneous, and mandatory primaries (Paso) on 11 August. As its name implies, the Paso is a necessary step for any candidate looking to take part in October’s general election. This helps to explain the high number of presidential pre-candidates taking part. But the fact that none of them will be facing in-party opponents reflects the fragmentation and polarisation of Argentine politics.
