HONDURAS: Hernández wields hammer while urging peace

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández led a ‘march for peace’ on 22 June in Tegucigalpa, organised by the ruling Partido Nacional (PN). It came at the end of a week of violent protests in the capital and beyond, claiming three lives. While Hernández called for peace, however, he deployed the military police (PMOP) to crack down on further protests. This resulted in a violent incident involving the PMOP on the campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), during which at least four students were injured.
