NICARAGUA: Sandinistas undeterred by sanctions

Nicaragua’s national assembly, controlled by the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), reformed an internal regulation on 25 June in order to keep the body’s president, Gustavo Porras, in his place. Four days earlier Porras had been sanctioned by the US treasury department, along with a further three officials deemed to be in President Daniel Ortega’s “inner circle”, accused of violating the rights of opposition protesters in the country’s long-running political crisis.
