EL SALVADOR: Bukele cracks down on mara gangs

“We don’t want a war. We just want to control our territory so that Salvadoreans can live in peace,” President Nayib Bukele said on 25 June. Bukele’s ‘tweet’ followed the deployment five days earlier of an additional 2,500 police officers and 3,000 soldiers as part of his new government’s security strategy, Plan Cuscatlán, designed to strike the finances of El Salvador’s mara gangs, and cut off all communication with gang leaders in the country’s prisons.
