DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Police injure deputies protesting Medina re-election

The rift within the long-ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) deepened significantly this week. Several PLD deputies loyal to former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000, 2004-2012) were injured by police outside congress on 24 June after they joined protesters seeking to erect a permanent tarpaulin outside the building to oppose a constitutional amendment to allow President Danilo Medina to seek re-election once again. The pro-Medina president of the lower chamber of congress, Radhamés Camacho, ordered the deployment of the police and military to preserve order.
