Mexico: The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that on 21 June that Texas Governor,
Greg Abbot, had announced that a thousand soldiers from the Texas National Guard will be sent to the Southwest border to support US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This combined federal and state effort is intended to manage the illegal migratory inflow at the border, increase border security, and alleviate the excess strain on resources. Acting DHS Secretary
Kevin McAleenan said:
“The deployment of Texas National Guard personnel provides critical support to our law enforcement agents at the border at a time of tremendous need”. These troops will provide staffing support at entry points and instalments of temporary detention centres, CBP will soon also establish temporary holding facilities in El Paso and the Rio Grande. Another press release from Governor Abbot said that the US federal government will pay for 100% of the costs associated with this short-term mission. This increase in border troops has raised concerns about potential human rights abuses committed against migrants. In addition to this, on 27 June US Congress approved US$4.6bn in emergency border funding to deal with the migration crisis at the US-Mexico border.
