In brief: Ecuador

Ecuador’s economic & social inclusion ministry (MIES) has reported that 140,000 people in Ecuador have fallen into poverty or extreme poverty, and are of high vulnerability. Of Ecuador’s population of approximately 16.5 million, 23% live in poverty, and 8.3% in extreme poverty. The same report cites MIES head Bernice Cordero as saying that this year the ministry will invest an additional US$148m in its financial assistance programmes, from US$700m in 2018 to US$848m this year, with the aim of reducing poverty.
