In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national oil and gas sector regulatory agency (ANP) has announced record oil and natural gas production levels in May. Oil production totalled 2.73m barrels per day (bpd), a 4.9% increase on production in April and 4.7% increase on total production recorded in May 2018. Natural gas production totalled 118m cubic metres per day (m3/d) in May this year, which represents a 4.4% monthly increase and a 5.4% increase year-on-year. These record levels of oil and gas production come amidst a slight decrease in industrial production overall. The national statistics institute (Ibge) has reported that industrial production fell 0.2% in May compared with April and accumulated a 0.7% decrease in the first five months of 2019. Year-on-year industrial production in May has increased, however, by 7.1%. Industrial production in Brazil plunged in May 2018 due to a lorry drivers’ strike.
