COLOMBIA: Santrich vanishing act imperils peace

Seuxis Paucias Hernández Solarte (‘Jesús Santrich’) disappeared without trace on 29 June, throwing Colombia’s peace process into uncertainty. Santrich, a former guerrilla commander and peace negotiator, took up his seat in the lower chamber of congress for the Fuerza Alternativa Revolucionaria del Común (Farc) on 11 June. But barely two weeks later he gave his security detail the slip and disappeared, causing widespread consternation. The Farc was caught unawares judging by a statement put out by its political council urging Santrich to reaffirm his commitment to the peace accord. Along with political parties pushing for the peace accord’s implementation, the Farc fears that the government led by President Iván Duque, and his ruling right-wing Centro Democrático (CD), will use this to weaken it further.
