VENEZUELA: Maduro regime squirms as torture allegations hit home

Juan Guaidó is hoping that the death this week of a naval corvette captain, Rafael Acosta Arévalo, arrested by military counterintelligence (DGCIM) on suspicion of plotting to topple Venezuela’s de facto government led by Nicolás Maduro, will be the tipping point for the military. Guaidó, the widely recognised interim president and opposition figurehead, has been trying to no avail to provoke a military uprising for several months.
