* Brazil’s anti-trust regulator, Cade, has issued fines to 11 companies and 42 individuals for operating as a ‘cartel’ in public bids for trains and metro infrastructure works in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and the Federal District (Brasília). Cade has concluded that at least 26 bidding contests were hampered by these companies’ anti-competitive behaviour between 1999 and 2013. The 11 companies, which include the Brazilian subsidiaries of French multinational Alstom, Canada’s Bombardier, and Spain’s CAF, have been fined a combined total of R$531.1m (US$139.7m), while the fines issued to the 42 people amount to R$19.3m (US$5.1m).
