Honduras: Hernández back under pressure over drug allegations

Recent revelations that in 2015 President Juan Orlando Hernández was targeted in an investigation into large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) since “at least in or about 2013” have left the president again on the defensive. He has since issued a statement underlining that the US Department of Justice had found no evidence to support the accusations. However, the revelations come as the links between the political class and organised crime are again under scrutiny after his predecessor, Porfirio Lobo (2010-2014), also of the conservative Partido Nacional (PN), was accused of corruption.
