HONDURAS: Hernández seeks to stem tide of protests

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández made a concerted effort this week to undercut support for protesting medical workers and teachers. Hernández unveiled a new agricultural development programme (PDAH) that he claimed would benefit thousands of agricultural producers, reduce high levels of rural poverty, enhance food security, and revitalise the country’s agricultural sector. The launch of the programme coincides with the publication of a report by the NGO Amnesty International (AI) accusing the Hernández administration of “excessive use of force” against demonstrators.
