ARGENTINA: De la Rúa’s legacy still weighs heavy

Argentina’s former president Fernando de la Rúa (1999-2001), who resigned shortly before the largest sovereign debt default in history, died on 9 July. The image of De la Rúa escaping by helicopter from the roof of the presidential palace Casa Rosada amid fatal riots is indelibly stamped upon the memory of Argentines who lived through the bitter economic and social turmoil, which still shapes Argentine politics to this day. His death comes in the run-up to general elections on 27 October which will pit against each other two distinct political visions for dealing with the socioeconomic ramifications of that day: the outward-looking, economically orthodox, centre-right Cambiemos coalition led by President Mauricio Macri, and the inward-looking, economically heterodox, leftist Frente de Todos coalition led by Alberto Fernández and former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015).
