Argentina's Fernández pledges to take on IMF if elected

On 26 June, Alberto Fernández, the Peronist challenger hoping to dethrone the becalmed administration of President Mauricio Macri in October’s presidential elections, met the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Western Hemisphere representative Alejandro Werner to discuss the structure of the country’s debt with the organisation. “Whatever the result [of the election],” he told journalists after the meetings, “we must renegotiate with the [International Monetary] Fund.”
