VENEZUELA: The challenge of striking a deal in Barbados

Talks between representatives of the de facto government led by Nicolás Maduro and opposition figurehead Juan Guaidó resumed in Barbados this week. Precisely what is being discussed has not been revealed but, for as much as a huge gulf separates the two sides, their most public disagreement at present is over the duration of the negotiations. Guaidó, widely recognised as the interim president, insists that the priority is Venezuela’s suffering people and that the opposition is not interested in endless discussions with no meaningful concessions while affording the government time to regroup; Maduro’s representatives contend that any solution of the country’s problems will require time.
