PERU: Vizcarra faces mining protests

Five years after the last deadly protest against the ‘Tía María’ copper mining project [WR-15-19], the local population in the province of Islay in Peru’s south-eastern region of Arequipa is once again up in arms. Local civil society groups have launched an indefinite strike in rejection of the decision by the central government led by President Martín Vizcarra to authorise the project despite the enduring environmental concerns expressed by the affected community. The Vizcarra administration in under pressure to defuse the tensions in the area and to succeed where past governments have failed and try to find a definite solution to the conflict that is acceptable to all parties.
