MEXICO: Jalisco ‘superdelegate’ resigns over corruption scandal

Carlos Lomelí resigned his post as federal government delegate to the western state of Jalisco on 12 July. On his various social media platforms, Lomelí announced that he would step down, “lest noise and politicking affect the work that needs to be done in Jalisco”. The “noise and politicking” to which Lomelí was referring was the public outcry following allegations first made by anti-corruption NGO Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI) on 20 May that Lomelí was involved in corruption. MCCI investigations have linked Lomelí to nine pharmaceutical companies who have been awarded government contracts worth over M$164m (US$8.6m) and accuse Lomelí of conflict of interest.
