In brief: Brazil steps up push for OECD membership

* President Jair Bolsonaro’s government has created a council which will accompany Brazil’s application process to become a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Brazil formally requested accession to the OECD in 2017 and its bid has gained momentum since the US formally announced its support for it in May this year. Brazil has already adopted around 30% of the mechanisms required by the OECD to qualify for full membership, according to state news agency Agência Brasil. This new council will be responsible for approving the government’s strategy and communication policy relating to the accession process. It will be led by the government’s chief-of-staff and include the foreign minister, economy minister, and secretary-general to the presidency.
