In brief: US$30m WB loan to tackle Honduras poverty

* Honduras’s President Juan Orlando Hernández has signed an agreement with the World Bank (WB) for a US$30m loan aimed at strengthening the social protection system in Honduras to directly benefit approximately 40,000 households living in extreme poverty in urban areas, whilst indirectly benefiting more than 200,000 families in rural parts of the country. This project, which will be run by the development & social inclusion ministry (Sedis), will include the conditional cash transfer programme (CCT) 'Bono Vida Mejor' (BVM), which seeks to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty by creating opportunities and developing skills and competences in education, health and nutrition of families in extreme poverty. The projects will be initially implemented in the country’s capital Tegucigalpa, as well as in San Pedro Sula, the capital of Cortés department, and Choloma municipality also in Cortés department.
