Introduction

At the end of last year Ecuador’s national assembly approved a reform proposed by President Lenín Moreno the previous May, which amends the controversial communications law approved in 2013 (LOC). The reform, which modifies and eliminates some core sections of the so-called “gag law”, has been understood as an effort by the current government to guarantee freedom of expression and press. It is also widely considered a political decision which allows President Moreno to distance his government from the actions and policies of his predecessor Rafael Correa (2007-2017).
