DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina rules out re-election bid

Dominican President Danilo Medina finally brought an end to his prolonged silence on 22 July by indirectly confirmed that he would not seek to push through congress another constitutional reform in order to permit him to run for a third straight term in office in 2020. Medina’s decision paves the way for former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000, 2004-2012) to seek election: Fernández had spearheaded protests within the long-ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) against such a reform. The demonstrations led by the PLD faction loyal to Fernández, however, provided the catalyst for wider protests by the political opposition and social organisations which could undermine his electoral ambitions.
