Andrés Valencia Pinzón says will open new markets for avocados and other Colombian agricultural products. The agriculture ministry notes that Japan has imported approximately US$211.5m in avocados over recent years, primarily from Mexico. Colombia is the world’s fourth-largest producer of the Hass avocado and the government aims to increase the country’s share in the international avocado market. Colombia exported US$47.1m in avocados during the first five months of 2019 according to the ministry of commerce, a 30.8% increase compared with the same period in 2018. Around 75% of Colombia’s avocado exports are currently destined for the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
