In brief: Colombia opens export markets in Japan

* Colombia’s agriculture ministry has announced that Colombian Hass avocados will be exported to Japan from the end of July, which agricultural minister Andrés Valencia Pinzón says will open new markets for avocados and other Colombian agricultural products. The agriculture ministry notes that Japan has imported approximately US$211.5m in avocados over recent years, primarily from Mexico. Colombia is the world’s fourth-largest producer of the Hass avocado and the government aims to increase the country’s share in the international avocado market. Colombia exported US$47.1m in avocados during the first five months of 2019 according to the ministry of commerce, a 30.8% increase compared with the same period in 2018. Around 75% of Colombia’s avocado exports are currently destined for the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
