Renewing ties with Ecuador

Brazil: On 16 July, the chief of the Brazilian armed forces’ joint chief of staff, Lieutenant Brigadier Raul Botelho, and the Commander of US Southern Command (Southcom), Admiral Craig Faller, met at the Southcom headquarters in Miami, Florida, to advance the military relationship between the two countries. The two men “discussed the deepening and expanding cooperative defence ties between the Western Hemisphere’s two largest democracies”, according to a statement released on 17 July by Southcom. As stated by Faller, the visit helped both nations “take another important step in advancing [their] military relationship and expanding [their] defence partnership to support goals that [they] share as neighbours committed to working together for a secure, stable, and peaceful region”. Faller notes that this cooperation between the two countries includes “a wide range of partnership activities”, namely the fight against proliferation and drug trafficking, humanitarian assistance, personnel exchanges, and the sharing of information and expertise. This year, Brazil will host the Atlantic and amphibious phases of Unitas, the world’s longest running, multinational maritime security exercise carried out to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations. According to Faller, this is a clear demonstration of how “the legacy of the Brazilian armed forces as a committed security partner continues to grow as they assume new leadership roles that promote security cooperation, build regional capacity and support security and stability in the Western Hemisphere and other regions”.
