El Chapo out of play but violent game continues

Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, Mexico’s most powerful drug trafficking organisation (DTO) leader for two decades, was sentenced to life plus 30 years by a US federal court on 17 July and sent to the ‘supermax’ ADX Florence prison in Colorado. Bringing him to justice was a great success for the so-called ‘kingpin strategy’ pursued by US and Mexican law enforcement. But there is a problem. Everything indicates that his removal has led to an increase rather than a decrease in violent crime in Mexico.
