Jamaica’s continuing reliance on states of emergency

On 7 July, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that a state of public emergency had been declared in the St Andrew South Police Division, which includes parts of Kingston, until 21 July. Subsequently, the senate approved extending the state of emergency (SOE) until at least 5 October. SOEs were already in place in the parishes of St James, Hanover, and Westmoreland.
