PERU: Mining tensions mount

Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra authorised military intervention on 4 August at the Matarani port terminal, one of the country’s primary mining ports, located in the province of Islay in the southern region of Arequipa. Vizcarra took the decision the day before an expected new round of protests. Protesters had blocked the port for three weeks, with partial road blockades, in the wake of an announcement on 9 July by the Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) confirming the government’s full authorisation of the ‘Tía María’ open-pit copper mining project.
