DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Economy minister fired over re-election

Dominican Economy Minister Isidoro Santana was summarily dismissed on 31 July. Just hours earlier he had noted that the economy would expand by 5% this year, not as rapidly as recent years but still one of the fastest rates of GDP growth in the region. Not an obviously sackable offence. Santana, however, had not reckoned with the strength of President Danilo Medina’s feelings about re-election.
