PARAGUAY: Impeachment threat recedes

The threat of impeachment hanging over Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez appears to have receded after his administration succeeded in securing the support of the dissident faction of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC). The threat remains latent, however, with the political opposition deciding to present an impeachment motion in congress even though the congressional arithmetic is no longer in its favour. Abdo Benítez is now more likely to survive these impeachment efforts but the ordeal will weaken him and his administration politically.
