Colombia: On 5-7 August, the Commander of US Southern Command (Southcom), Admiral
Craig Faller, visited Colombia to discuss regional security concerns and reaffirm US security support to the Andean nation. Those Faller met included Colombia’s defence minister
Guillermo Botero. Issues discussed included Venezuela. Faller said that the US
“is working with Colombia, Brazil, and other regional partners on how to assist Venezuela if the embargo-like sanctions announced by the White House this week ultimately force President Nicolás Maduro to step down”. Announced on 5 August by US President
Donald Trump the sanctions
freeze all Venezuelan government assets held in the US. The move also threatens to sanction any entities that do business with the Maduro administration.
