Francisco Ísmodes, has announced the suspension of the construction licence for the US$1.4bn 'Tía María' mining project, which is located in Arequipa region, until officials evaluate its legality and objections from local authorities. The company that owns the Tía María concession, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC), had announced on 9 July that, after years of deliberations, the Peruvian government had finally given it authorisation to develop the project. However, the project has been highly contentious amid concerns about the impact of the mine on the Tambo river and there are ongoing public protests against it in Arequipa.
