In brief: Peru’s SPCC calls for dialogue on mining project

* Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC), the company that owns the US$1.4bn 'Tía María' mining project, located in Peru's Arequipa region, has called for civil society and the authorities to promote “dialogue spaces”. This follows the announcement by Peru’s mining & energy minister, Francisco Ísmodes, that the project’s construction licence has been suspended until officials evaluate its legality and objections from local authorities. The project has been highly contentious amid concerns about the impact of the mine on the Tambo river and there are ongoing public protests against it in Arequipa which have turned violent at times.
