In brief: Brazil on brink of recession

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released its latest figures for the index of economic activity (IBC-Br), a measure of GDP growth. The IBC-Br grew a monthly 0.30% in June compared with May, but contracted 0.13% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2019. If this quarterly contraction is confirmed when GDP figures are released later this month, then Brazil will have entered into technical recession, after GDP contracted by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter in Q1.
