In brief: Nicaragua courts Iran

* Delegates from Nicaragua’s government have been sent on an official visit to Iran, with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties in economic and commercial matters. The government delegation comprises finance minister Iván Acosta; the presidential advisor for production and trade, Francisco López; and advisor to the presidency for investments, Laureano Ortega Murillo (President Daniel Ortega’s son). During their first meeting on 10 August with Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif the delegates discussed areas of interest to “enhance trade between the two countries, in fields such as food, energy, finance, medicine and technology”. They also met with Iran’s finance minister Farhad Dejpasand, with whom an agreement has been signed for the “promotion and reciprocal protection of investments”.
