MEXICO: Opposition prepares to stand up to Morena in congress

Opposition parties in Mexico’s federal chamber of deputies have vowed to defend the rules of the chamber and the political rights these confer on them from efforts by the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) to change them to its benefit. The Morena majority bench has proposed changing the rules of the chamber so that it can retain its presidency for the next two years. The opposition warns that this will only weaken democracy by allowing Morena to abuse its majority to the detriment of plurality; and it has threatened to paralyse the legislature if Morena presses on with its plans. This heightens political tensions as Morena and the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador face growing accusations of authoritarianism.
