ARGENTINA: An orderly transition?

In the last 40 years no democratically elected non-Peronist head of state in Argentina has succeeded in completing a full term in office. Weakened by hyperinflation Raúl Alfonsín (1983-1989) had to step down six months early; shaken by riots, default, and devaluation Fernando de la Rúa (1999-2001) had to be helicoptered out of the presidential palace Casa Rosada. Now, faced by a rolling financial crisis, President Mauricio Macri is struggling not to share their humiliation.
