EL SALVADOR: Bukele hails least bloody month since Peace Accords

The lowest number of monthly homicides since the 1992 Peace Accords. This was President Nayib Bukele’s recent boast upon receiving the figures for August 2019 which showed a total of 131 homicides in El Salvador, less than half of the 272 registered in August 2018. Unsurprisingly Bukele attributed the decline, which works out at an average 4.2 per day, down from 7.7 per day when he took office in June 2019, to his security initiative ‘Plan Control Territorial’. Others, however, remain sceptical about the causes of this fall.
