BOLIVIA: Morales feels the heat over Amazon blaze

Bolivia’s President Evo Morales is facing mounting criticism over the forest fires which have devastated the Chiquitania area in the eastern department of Santa Cruz. Opponents of Morales, who is seeking re-election in the 20 October general elections, have seized on his initial reluctance to accept international aid to fight the fires, and government policies which they argue were a contributing factor. With Morales’s claims to champion the environment and indigenous rights already subject to doubt due to projects such as the proposed highway construction initiative through the Isiboro Sécure national park and indigenous territory (Tipnis), the fallout could result in further damage ahead of what is already proving to be his stiffest contest yet.
