In brief: Mexico gov’t says fourth electrical energy auction likely

* Mexico’s energy minister Rocío Nahle has announced that a fourth electrical energy auction is likely in the foreseeable future, although did not provide a precise timeframe, adding that this would be dependent on the growth of the country’s transmission network. Speaking at the Siemens Energy Meet Point forum in Mexico City, Nahle said savings generated by the renegotiation of gas pipelines would allow Mexico's federal electricity commission (CFE) to invest further in infrastructure. The previous government led by Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) carried out three electricity generation auctions, the first for 12 projects for 3,000MW, the second for 20 projects for 2,300MW, and the third for ten projects for 2,500MW; plans for a fourth auction were originally abandoned due to saturated transmission lines. Nahle also explained that the CFE is analysing the second phase in relation to the Laguna Verde nuclear centre in Veracruz state.
