Brazil: On 13 September US Secretary of State
Michael Pompeo met Brazil’s foreign minister,
Ernesto Araújo, to launch the US-Brazil Strategic Partnership Dialogue in Washington, DC. Pompeo and Araújo highlighted the establishment of a private sector-led, US$100m, 11-year impact investment fund for Amazon biodiversity conservation, following through on the commitment made in March by Presidents
Donald Trump and
Jair Bolsonaro. The two also underscored the “
significant and growing economic relationship” between the US and Brazil. Pompeo commended Brazil for its decisive leadership in addressing the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. He applauded Brazil’s commitment to co-host the Warsaw Process working group on humanitarian issues and refugees as part of the Ministerial to Promote Peace and Security in the Middle East.
