In brief: DR gov’t presents 2020 draft budget

* The Dominican Republic’s (DR) finance minister Donald Guerrero has presented a draft state budget for 2020 worth US$19.19bn, which, according to an official press release, sets out to guarantee social investment and maintain the country’s commitment to “the responsible and transparent management of public finances”. The proposed budget assigns US$16.56bn to current and capital expenditure and US$2.62bn to the repayment of debt, reduction of accounts payable and asset acquisition. In addition, it guarantees that social expenditure will receive 47% of the total expenditure in a bid to maintain the government’s current social projects in the health and education sectors as well as focusing on key infrastructure projects. The draft proposal will be presented before the senate on 1 October.
