ARGENTINA: Macri cranks up campaign

Thousands of supporters turned out in the district of Barrancas de Belgrano in the City of Buenos Aires for the start of President Mauricio Macri’s ‘30 cities in 30 days’ campaign on 28 September ahead of presidential elections on 27 October. The reception will not be as warm elsewhere in the country, despite hostility to Kirchnerismo running deepest in urban centres. Macri’s two-pronged campaign consists of highlighting his government’s achievements and portraying the Peronist frontrunner Alberto Fernández as a puppet of former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), his running mate. The victory of Macri’s centre-right Cambiemos coalition in the provincial elections in Mendoza on 29 September might have planted the first kernel of doubt in his presidential rival’s mind.
