GUATEMALA: Morales rails against Cicig

At the recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Jimmy Morales devoted a significant part of his speech to attacking the now defunct International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig), whose mandate he ended after it called for him to be investigated for alleged illegal campaign finance. Morales’ attack on Cicig comes as there are signs of a backlash domestically against the UN-backed body, which finally ended operations on 3 September.
