Claiming success in fighting huachicoleo

“We have not yet completely eradicated fuel theft…but we will.” This is how Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the progress his administration has made in combating fuel theft (locally known as ‘huachicoleo’) since assuming office in December 2018. Unlike in some other public security areas, the López Obrador administration can point to some clear success in reducing huachicoleo, particularly that affecting the state-owned oil firm Pemex. Nevertheless, this dangerous activity continues with criminal organisations dedicated to this still active in various parts of the country and representing a considerable threat to public security.
