DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina’s dauphin prevails in party primaries

President Danilo Medina gained a measure of revenge over his arch rival within the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012), this week. Fernández led protests against a proposed constitutional reform to allow Medina’s re-election in 2020. Amid infighting within the PLD, Medina begrudgingly backed down. But Medina refused to clear the way for Fernández to secure the PLD presidential candidacy, throwing his weight behind Gonzalo Castillo, his public works minister. Medina’s chosen successor defeated Fernández in primary elections on 6 October. The result was very close, however, oscillating either way throughout the vote count, and Fernández refused to accept it, denouncing electoral fraud.
