HAITI: Pressure builds on Moïse

“The country is on the brink of an unprecedented human catastrophe”. This warning was made in a letter by a group of opposition figures addressed to United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres. The letter went on to urge the international community to drop its backing for President Jovenel Moïse who has faced mass protests in recent weeks over his alleged embezzlement of funds from Venezuela’s discounted oil initiative Petrocaribe, his perceived failure to govern, and, most recently, fuel shortages [WR-19-39]. With no end in sight to the protests and fresh concerns about police brutality, speculation is mounting as to whether Moïse will see out his term.
