HONDURAS: More damning allegations for Hernández

“100% false, absurd, ridiculous, Alice in Wonderland crazy”. This was the response by President Juan Orlando Hernández to claims made on 2 October that Mexican drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera gave US$1m to his brother, Juan Antonio ‘Tony’ Hernández, that was intended for him. A former national legislator for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN), Tony Hernández was arrested in November 2018 on drug-related allegations. The incendiary claims by Assistant US Attorney Jason Richman, which follow allegations in August that the PN government received US$1.5m in drug-trafficking proceeds to secure Hernández’s 2013 election [WR-19-32], were made at the start of Tony Hernández’s trial which could well produce further discomfort for the President who has been facing ongoing protests since April, calling for him to step down.
