Manini Ríos wins legal battle ahead of Uruguay’s elections

Guido Manini Ríos, the former army commander and presidential candidate of Uruguay’s right-wing Cabildo Abierto (CA), has successfully fought off an attempt to bring him before a court before the first round of general elections on 27 October. While he remains fourth, and at some remove from the second-place berth required to proceed to a run-off, he is on course to record the strongest performance by a candidate not standing for one of the three traditional parties in Uruguay’s history. The CA is set to return an influential bloc to congress as a result.
