URUGUAY: Ruling FA loses stranglehold on power

The dominance of Uruguayan politics by the left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition is at an end. The FA’s presidential candidate, Daniel Martínez, won the most votes in the first round of elections on 27 October but his closest rival, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou of the centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos), is favourite to win the second-round run-off on 24 November. Even if Martínez wins, he will not enjoy a majority in either chamber of congress, something every FA administration has had since the coalition first came to power in 2005.
